Review by Karlo Kardozo

The album Symphony No 9 In D Minor Choral Symphony No 1 by Beethoven, performed by Orchestre Des Concerts Lamoureux, Igor Markevitch, and a talented group of vocalists including Hilde Güden, Aafje Heynis, Heinz Rehfuss, Fritz Uhl, and Oratorienchor Karlsruhe, is a sublime masterpiece that showcases the composer's genius. The album features two of Beethoven's most celebrated symphonies, both of which are performed with great skill and passion.

The first symphony, Symphony No 9 In D Minor, is a monumental work that is widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in Western classical music. The performance by Orchestre Des Concerts Lamoureux, conducted by Igor Markevitch, is nothing short of breathtaking. The orchestra's precision and clarity are remarkable, and Markevitch's interpretation brings out the full emotional range of Beethoven's music. The vocal performances by the soloists and choir are equally impressive, with Hilde Güden, Aafje Heynis, Heinz Rehfuss, and Fritz Uhl all delivering stirring performances that perfectly capture the spirit of the music.

The second symphony, Choral Symphony No 1, is another masterpiece that showcases Beethoven's incredible talent. The Orchestre Des Concerts Lamoureux's performance is once again superb, with Igor Markevitch bringing out the full richness and complexity of the music. The soloists and choir are equally impressive, with the Oratorienchor Karlsruhe delivering a powerful and moving performance that perfectly complements the orchestra.

German composer and pianist, born in 1770 (baptized 17 December 1770) in Bonn, Germany and died 26 March 1827 in Vienna, Austria. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in classical music. Beethoven led Viennese Classicism to its highest development and paved the way for Romantic music. Beethoven was the eldest son of a singer in the Kapelle of the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne and grandson of the Archbishop's Kapellmeister. He moved in 1792 to Vienna, where he had some lessons from Haydn and others, quickly establishing himself as a remarkable keyboard-player and original composer. By 1815 increasing deafness made public performance impossible and accentuated existing eccentricities of character, patiently tolerated by a series of rich patrons and his royal pupil the Archduke Rudolph. Beethoven did much to enlarge the possibilities of music and widen the horizons of later generations of composers. To his contemporaries he was sometimes a controversial figure, making heavy demands on listeners both by the length and by the complexity of his writing, as he explored new fields of music.
