It’s pretty safe to assume that everyone remembers the 1967 movie, “The Graduate,” written by the phenomenal Buck Henry and featuring a young Dustin Hoffman being seduced by Academy Award winning actress Anne Bancroft and the Simon & Garfunkel song that was birthed from their union, “Mrs. Robinson.” Frank Sinatra grabbed onto this success for his 1968 album, MY WAY and the result was a cringe-worthy rendition that was almost uncomfortable to listen to. Simon & Garfunkel’s haunting song about emotional isolation was mucked up by Sinatra in 1969 with a ring-a-ding-ding big band arrangement and dumb rewriting of the lyrics. Some of the lyrics were even changed from the original: “Jesus” in the line, “Jesus loves you more than you will know” was swapped with “Jilly” in reference to Frank’s pal, Jilly Rizzo. Additionally, “Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio, our nation turns its lonely eyes to you” became, “And you’ll get yours, Mrs. Robinson, foolin’ with that young stuff like you do.” And the crass inquiry “So, how’s your bird, Mrs. Robinson?” There were quite a few times during the late 1960s/early 1970s when Sinatra tried covering contemporary pop hits- it's nowhere near the strangest stuff he recorded in that era (the Rod McKuen album, for starters), but there are reasons why these aren't the songs of his that tend to be remembered. This is one time Frankie shouldn't have done it... his way.
All My Tomorrows is vastly superior to the Capitol version, with a passionate reading by FS and a dreamy Don Costa arrangement. Watch What Happens is a fine swinger that kicks the album off nicely, while Didn't We has a smoky, late night atmosphere and a somber reading by Sinatra. If You Go Away is very haunting and powerful, and FS forces this one out quite impressively. A Day In The Life Of A Fool is a perfect Sinatra song.
