Review by Robin Danehav

Cultures Paysages is an album by Frédéric Nogray and Laëtitia Bourget that presents a compelling exploration of soundscapes and field recordings. The album is a rich tapestry of sounds that captures the essence of different cultures and landscapes from around the world.

The album is divided into several tracks, each of which is dedicated to a particular culture or landscape. The opening track, "Bamboo Grove," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its haunting bamboo flute and lush ambient sounds. Other tracks, such as "Gobi Desert" and "Amazon Rainforest," transport the listener to far-off lands with their evocative soundscapes.

One of the most impressive aspects of Cultures Paysages is the attention to detail in the sound design. Each track is meticulously crafted to capture the unique character of the culture or landscape it represents. The use of field recordings adds an authentic and organic quality to the soundscapes, making the album a truly immersive listening experience.

  • «What is happening with these faces, tainted with sad patience, pitted with mould ?
  • And then with that travelling, slowly withdrawing from them?
  • All those stains are not abstract eruptions, but how to say ? palpable peels of time, visible (maybe measurable) curves of time.
  • Time is thick and Laëtitia Bourget’s work makes one feel that strange sedimentation.»
  • Stéphanie Eligert about Cultures-paysages

About Frédéric Nogray, Laëtitia Bourget

Frédéric Nogray is a self-taught musician, improviser and composer since 1999. He pays a particular attention on sounds in their intrinsic qualities and for what they are: vibratory phenomenon. But also for their broadcasting into the listening space, our perceptions on it, and the various states of consciousness induced by the listening that led us in the intimacy of the sound, into our own intimacy. Years after years, he used several electronic and electro-acoustic devices during concerts, for recordings and sound installations, and during collaborations with other artists. The sounds he often uses are coming from feedbacks effects of analogical devices for the broadcasting and treatment of sound (mixing boards, effects&), then transformed or not by computer processing. Since 2005 he plays a more instrumental music using crystal singing bowls. These bowls are made of powder of high tempered melting quartz (silica) as crucibles. They are conceived for an industrial use, in the manufacturing of components for the new technologies. The music composed with these crystal bowls is acoustic but the purpose and the listening remain the same than his music composed with the electronic devices. He compose also and play with field recordings mostly from nature. In 2012, he wents twice in Honduras to record sounds, and since then he has released few releases on different labels.
