Review by Peter Garety

Hypocrisy's album Catch 22 V2008 is a masterpiece of death metal. The band has created a sound that is both bold and uncompromising, while still managing to be catchy and memorable. The album is a perfect blend of brutal riffs, intricate melodies and powerful vocals. It is a testament to the band's musicianship and their ability to create music that is both complex and accessible.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Valley of the Damned," which showcases the band's ability to seamlessly blend different elements of death metal into a cohesive whole. The song is a perfect example of how Hypocrisy can create music that is both heavy and melodic, without sacrificing any of the aggression that is the hallmark of the genre.

Another standout track is "The Abyss," which features some of the most impressive guitar work on the album. The song is a perfect example of how Hypocrisy can create music that is both technically impressive and emotionally powerful. The band's ability to create music that is both complex and accessible is truly remarkable.

The band's 2002 album, Catch 22, was re-released in re-mastered format in 2008 because the original production was deemed "erroneous" even by fans: honestly, the mixing isn't that problematic, featuring abnormally raw and heavy guitars and very chaotic, resonation-defective distant drums in the vein of Metallica's St. Anger that suit the more Hardcore Punk-tending material better. However, like their previous one, the songwriting remains defective and simplified to the point of minimalism.Highlights: "Don't Judge Me", "Hatred".

Love both this and that 2.0 version. Peter has said that her purposefully did the "Bloodbath" type vocals for thd 2.0, just so death metal fans might enjoy them more than the higher pitched once.
Some songs in my opinion sound better here and others on the 2.0.

update... a year later this version is on Spotify :)
Seen 'em at all 3 different Oakland Metro's, Pound SF, DNA Lounge, Slim's, Regency Ballroom....etc., gonna see 'em next week on Friday the 13th at Cornerstone Berkeley, unfortunately it's the same night as Arch Enemy, Behemoth & Napalm Death are playing at UC Berkeley University Campus of Berkeley, who the Hell are scheduling these Metal shows on the same fricking day, gosh idiots! ⸸⁶⁶⁶⛧?

Hipocrisy, the brainchild of a Swedish mage, was never a band to repeat albums - you could tell from the beginning when Osculum Infame came out as a sophomore (!!) ... tbh, Catch 22 is NOT one of my faves yet it is a very entertaining album, due to a very clever sense of narrative flow, everything falls in the right place, clockwork thunder perfect, which is PT's trademark.

This album is unique among the Hypocrisy discography. The overall sound is abrasive yet still has that melodic Hypocrisy feel. To me, back then, it felt like a big f*** off to both nu-metal and the "nowadays" (now "back in the days-nowadays") melodic death metal that came out relentlessly in the early 2000's. Even In Flames had sold out to the music industry at that time, and listening to Catch 22 felt alleviating to me.
