Portsmouth Argiers is a stunning album by English multi-instrumentalist Mike Oldfield, released in 1991. The album features a fusion of world music and rock, with a heavy emphasis on Middle Eastern and North African music.
The album opens with the title track "Portsmouth," which has a Celtic-inspired melody that gradually builds into a complex arrangement of guitars, drums, and synths. "Argiers" follows, featuring a hypnotic Arabic rhythm and soaring electric guitar solos.
Other standout tracks include "The Wind Chimes," which features a beautiful melody played on a Japanese koto, and "North Point," which incorporates African percussion and vocals.
Oldfield's virtuosic guitar playing is a highlight throughout the album, and he is joined by several talented musicians, including percussionist Hossam Ramzy and vocalist Amar.
