Review by Maria McDonald

New Blues and Gospel by Reverend Gary Davis is a stunning album that showcases the legendary musician's talent and skill. The album features Davis' signature fingerstyle guitar playing, soulful vocals, and powerful lyrics that explore themes of faith, redemption, and the struggles of everyday life.

Listeners will be captivated by the album's opening track, "I Belong to the Band," a lively gospel tune that showcases Davis' impeccable guitar playing and infectious energy. The album also features several blues tracks, including "Death Don't Have No Mercy" and "Cocaine Blues," which showcase Davis' ability to convey deep emotions through his music.

What sets New Blues and Gospel apart from other blues and gospel albums is the way Davis seamlessly blends the two genres together. Tracks like "Samson and Delilah" and "Lord, Stand by Me" feature both bluesy guitar riffs and gospel-inspired lyrics, creating a unique sound that is both uplifting and deeply moving.

About Reverend Gary Davis

African-American blues, gospel singer and guitarist. Born: April 30, 1896 - Laurens County, SC, USA. Died: May 5, 1972 - Hammonton, NJ, USA. For his early 78 recordings before being ordained a minister, please go to . Born partially blind, Davis lost what little was left of his sight at a young age. Self-taught on the guitar, he assumed a unique multi-voice style produced solely with his thumb and index finger, playing ragtime, traditional, blues and original tunes in four-part harmony. He frequently performed on the streets of New York near Harlem, where he also came to be a well-known figure. In the 1930s occasionally accompanied or on recordings as a 2nd guitarist. It should be noted that as a man of faith in his later year, he rarely recorded blues after becoming a Reverend. He has been an influence on dozens of musicians such as , , , , , , and .
